How To Undertake Car Window Tinting By Yourself

While it’s recommended that you hire a professional to undertake car window tinting, if you have the skills you should go ahead and tint the windows by yourself. For you to properly do it you need to follow a set of steps. These steps include:

Get the right supplies

Everything should begin here. For you to properly tint the car you need to have the right supplies. Some of the must-haves include: lint-free cleaning cloth, window-tint film application solution, scraper blade, razor knife, heat gun, and application squeegee.

You can find all of these in your local store. When buying the tinting film, be cautious. Ensure that you are buying the right one. As a rule of thumb ensure that you go for a high-quality product that will last for a long time.

You should note that window tinting is controlled in different states. Before you go ahead and buy the tinting film, take time to find out the tinting rules in your state.

After collecting all the necessary tinting materials, find a dust-free area to work from. One of the best places to do it is in the garage. In addition to the area being dust free, it also should be away from excessive cold or heat.

Prepare the car windows

If window tinting is allowed in your state, your next step should be to prepare the windows for the application. Start with getting rid of any stickers or adhesives that might be on your windows. Once you are done, vacuum the interior to get rid of any dust that might be there.

You should then clean up the car windows using soapy water and a razor blade. All you need to do is to lower the window slightly so that you can reach even the very top. You should then mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water then using a blade, scrape away all the dirt and grime that might be present.

For ideal results, clean both sides of the windows.

Don’t use cleaners with ammonia or Windex as you will tint the windows purple. When cleaning, ensure that you get all the edges and seals. You should even consider rolling up the windows to get the bottom.

Once you are done with the cleaning, get a clean rag and dry the windows. You should wipe away the soapy water on both sides of the window. Once the windows are clean and dry, roll up the windows back up.

Apply the tinting film

Now it’s time to apply the tinting material. You should start by cutting the tinting film depending on the size of your windows. This calls for you to take the measurements of the windows and cut the film appropriately.

After cutting the different pieces, you should now place them on your windows. To do this you need to put the application solution on the outside of the window and roll the tint film over the window.

The purpose of the solution is to hold the film in place while you cut it to size. It also allows you to maneuver the film so that you can make a precise cut.

If you have sliding windows, roll the window down from the door frame and cut the top and sides of the film to your desired shape.

You should then realign the film so that it fits your windows perfectly. Remember to leave some excess film on every edge. You should note that you may have to reapply the water to make the film stick.

Once the tint is in place, use a heat gun and hard card and move the bubbles to the bottom. If you don’t have a heat gun, use a hand squeegee to smoothen out the surface. When using the heat gun, take caution that you don’t melt the film.

Auto glass tinting Springfield VA professionals recommend that you apply the heat on the outside of the film.

For the film to last for a long time, you need to take good care of it. As rule of thumb, don’t roll down the windows until the film has adhered properly to the surface.
